Old Bitcoin Wallets Stir: 2,209 BTC Moved in First 10 Days of August

Bitcoin held in long-dormant addresses is on the move. In the first 10 days of August, 2,209.05 BTC left wallets that had been idle for years, a 74.7% jump compared to the 1,264.16 BTC that moved during all of July, according to data from blockchain parser Btcparser.com.

The 10-day surge

The numbers are stark. Between August 1 and August 10, 2,209.05 BTC moved out of addresses that had been untouched for a long time. That's nearly three-quarters more than the entire month of July, which saw 1,264.16 BTC leave similar wallets. The spike is even more notable because it happened in just a third of the month.

The data was identified using Btcparser.com, a tool that scans the blockchain for activity in old addresses.

Addresses from 2010

The wallets in question date back to 2010 and later. That's early in bitcoin's history, when the cryptocurrency was worth pennies. Coins from that era are often considered 'old money' — held by early adopters or lost to time. When they move, it can signal a change in holder behavior, though the reasons are rarely clear.

The rest of August

The data covers only the first 10 days of the month. Whether the pace continues through the remaining three weeks is an open question. The next few weeks will show if this is a blip or a sustained shift.
