British sprinter CJ Ujah is one of 10 people charged in a major UK crypto fraud investigation, where suspects allegedly posed as police officers and crypto company representatives to trick victims out of their wallet funds. Ujah, 31, was charged with conspiracy to defraud following raids by the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit spanning Kent, Essex, and London. He was granted bail until 28 May at Chelmsford Crown Court.
The allegations
Investigators say the suspects used phone-based deception to gain access to victims' crypto wallets. One victim reportedly lost more than £300,000 ($408,895). Fellow British sprinter Brandon Mingeli, 25, was also charged and remains remanded in custody. Both men — along with the eight other co-defendants — are presumed innocent. British Athletics has not commented publicly on the case.
Ujah's background
Ujah is best known for running the first leg when Great Britain won the 4×100m relay at the 2017 World Championships — Usain Bolt's final race. He later served a 22-month doping ban tied to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after testing positive for a contaminated beta-alanine supplement; he was cleared of intentional doping. The timing of these charges isn't great for a comeback attempt, but the next hearing will likely shape whether that road continues.
The 28 May hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court will be the next concrete step. Prosecutors could outline the case in more detail, and the court may set a trial date or further bail conditions. For Ujah, the outcome will determine whether his athletic career can coexist with a criminal proceeding that carries serious prison time if proven.
