Oobit has plugged the USDT stablecoin into Brazil's PIX payment network. The integration gives the country's 170 million PIX users a direct way to transact with the dollar-pegged cryptocurrency.
The Integration
The move connects USDT — the world's largest stablecoin by market cap — to PIX, Brazil's instant payment system run by the central bank. PIX launched in 2020 and has since become the dominant digital payment method in the country, used by individuals, businesses, and government agencies. Oobit's system now lets users send and receive USDT through their existing PIX accounts, though the company hasn't detailed how the conversion or custody works.
For Brazilians, that means they can use the stablecoin without needing a separate crypto wallet or exchange account. The integration handles the back-end, bridging the traditional banking rails of PIX with the blockchain-based USDT.
Brazil is already one of the most crypto-friendly markets in Latin America. PIX's adoption is near-universal — essentially anyone with a bank account uses it. By tapping into that infrastructure, Oobit gives USDT a distribution channel that most crypto projects can only dream of. The 170 million number covers nearly the entire adult population of the country.
The integration also sidesteps one of the biggest barriers to crypto adoption: the friction of moving money between bank accounts and exchanges. Here, the user stays inside PIX. Oobit does the rest.
Tether's USDT is already the most traded cryptocurrency by volume. But real-world use — paying for coffee, sending remittances, buying goods — has lagged behind trading. Brazil's PIX network offers a ready-made user base for everyday transactions. If even a small fraction of those 170 million people start using USDT through PIX, the stablecoin's utility gets a serious boost.
Oobit hasn't announced any fees or limits tied to the integration. The company also hasn't said whether other stablecoins or cryptocurrencies will follow. For now, it's just USDT on PIX.
The integration is live as of this week. Users with a PIX account can start transacting in USDT immediately.
