OpenSea Opens Mobile App to Everyone, Pays Referrers 25% of Fees

OpenSea has opened its mobile app to all users, taking it out of beta. The NFT marketplace is also paying referrers 25% of fees, and it's running a social feed that pulls trades from across crypto apps, not just its own. Of the 56,000-plus beta signups, 76% were active users, according to the company.

A feed that doesn't stop at OpenSea

The social feed is the part worth watching. It shows trades from other crypto apps, which means OpenSea isn't treating its own marketplace as the center of the universe. For users, that's a single scrolling view of what's moving elsewhere. For OpenSea, it's a bet that being the place you check first matters more than being the place you trade last.

That's a shift in posture for a company that built its name on NFT trading. The app is now closer to a social layer over crypto activity broadly than a storefront for one marketplace.

The 25% referral math

OpenSea is paying referrers a quarter of the fees their referrals generate. It's a straightforward number, and a generous one by the standards of referral programs that typically pay out in the low-to-mid double digits. The company hasn't said how long the 25% rate holds or whether it shrinks over time.

Referral programs like this are usually about distribution. OpenSea gets people to bring their own audiences, and it shares the fee it would have collected anyway. Whether the cut is enough to move creators and traders away from wherever they're already posting is the open question.

What the beta numbers say

More than 56,000 people signed up for the beta, and 76% of them were active users. That's a high engagement rate for a waitlist, though the company hasn't defined what counts as active. It also hasn't broken out how many of those users stuck around after the first session.

Beta figures are always flattering. They come from the people who sought the product out. The real test starts now that anyone can download the app.

Where the app goes from here

OpenSea hasn't given a date for the next feature drop or said whether the referral rate will change. The 25% payout is the number to watch, since it's the easiest lever for the company to pull if the program gets expensive. For now, the app is live for everyone, the feed reaches across crypto apps, and the referral terms are public.

The company has also not said whether it plans to add trading for assets beyond NFTs inside the app, or how the cross-app feed handles data from competitors. Those are the details that will decide whether the app becomes a daily habit or another download that gets opened twice.
