Polkadot Validators Must Self-Stake 10,000 DOT as Governance Approves Upgrade

Polkadot’s governance process has approved a proposal that raises the bar for network validators. Starting now, each validator must personally stake at least 10,000 DOT — roughly $70,000 at current prices — to secure a slot in the active set. The change also scraps slashing penalties for nominators and speeds up unbonding times.

What the new minimum stake means

Validators on Polkadot are responsible for producing blocks and finalizing transactions. The previous minimum self-stake was significantly lower, but the upgrade forces validators to put more of their own capital at risk. That’s meant to align incentives: if a validator misbehaves, they lose their own tokens first. The 10,000 DOT floor applies to every validator in the active set. Anyone below that threshold won’t be allowed to validate until they top up.

Nominators get a break from slashing

Under the old rules, nominators — users who delegate their DOT to validators — could lose a portion of their stake if the validator they backed was slashed for misconduct. The new proposal eliminates that risk entirely. Nominators now face zero slashing exposure, regardless of what their chosen validator does. The move is designed to make staking less stressful for smaller token holders who might otherwise worry about losing funds through no fault of their own.

Faster unbonding

Unbonding — the process of withdrawing staked DOT — has been a sore point for many users. Previously, waiting periods stretched to 28 days. The upgrade drastically shortens that timeline, though the exact new duration wasn’t specified in the approved proposal. Faster unbonding gives participants more flexibility to move their tokens or exit staking when market conditions shift.

The governance vote passed with strong support from the community. The changes are now live on the network. Validators who can’t meet the 10,000 DOT self-stake requirement will be gradually ejected from the active set over the coming weeks.
