Polymarket Starts Live Testing of Protocol V2, New Markets to Switch on Nov. 2

Polymarket has begun live-testing Protocol V2, a ground-up rewrite of the smart contracts that run its prediction markets. The company's developer account introduced the new foundation on Monday. New markets are set to switch over to Protocol V2 on Nov. 2.

The platform has been running on its existing infrastructure since 2019. That's seven years on the same contract base, a stretch that in crypto terms counts as ancient. Protocol V2 is a full replacement, not an upgrade.

What Protocol V2 actually replaces

Polymarket's prediction markets depend on smart contracts to hold collateral, match trades, and settle outcomes. Those contracts have been live since 2019. Protocol V2 is built specifically for prediction markets, according to the developer account. That means the team didn't take a general-purpose DeFi contract and bolt on market logic — they wrote the thing from scratch for this use case.

The live-testing phase started Monday. No timeline was given for how long testing will run before the Nov. 2 switchover.

Nov. 2 cutoff for new markets

The switch date matters because it's only for new markets. Polymarket hasn't said what happens to markets already trading on the old contracts. They'll either keep running as-is, get migrated, or resolve under the existing rules. The developer account didn't specify.

Users who hold positions in markets created before Nov. 2 should watch for guidance on whether those contracts stay active. Nothing in Monday's announcement addressed that.

Seven years on the old stack

Polymarket launched in 2019. Since then the platform has processed prediction markets on everything from elections to sports to crypto prices. The old contracts have handled all of it. A rewrite after seven years suggests the team hit limits — gas costs, settlement speed, or features the original design couldn't support.

The developer account didn't list specific shortcomings of the old system. It described Protocol V2 as "a new smart-contract foundation built for prediction markets," which is the kind of line that leaves the technical details for the code itself.

What testers will be watching

Live testing means real markets, real money, and real settlement — not a testnet. Polymarket hasn't said whether the testing phase is open to all users or limited to a group. The developer account gave no details on caps, whitelists, or which markets are part of the test.

For a prediction market, the riskiest moment is settlement. If a contract miscounts an outcome or fails to pay out correctly, traders lose confidence fast. That's what the testing window is for.

New markets go live on Protocol V2 on Nov. 2. Until then, the old contracts keep running. Polymarket hasn't announced what happens to existing markets after the switch — that's the open question traders will be asking before they size up any position on the new stack.
