A Polymarket trader known as gud.hl lost $1.2 million Sunday after Spain eliminated Argentina 1-0 in extra time, wiping out the largest single position backing Argentina on the prediction market. The trader had bought roughly 12 million Argentina shares at an average price of 10 cents each, a bet that would have paid $11.2 million had Argentina won the 2026 World Cup.
The Bet
Gud.hl accumulated the Argentina shares over several weeks, building a position that dwarfed any other single trader's wager on the tournament favorite. The average entry price of 10 cents meant the trader needed Argentina to lift the trophy to see any return. A win would have delivered an 11-to-1 payout.
The Funding Trail
Blockchain analytics firm Bubblemaps traced the money behind the Argentina bet to a separate Solana wallet. That wallet had made $1.9 million trading the TRUMP memecoin shortly after its launch. The profits from that trade were then moved to the Polymarket wallet used by gud.hl.
The connection between memecoin windfalls and prediction market bets is a pattern the article notes has become increasingly common. Traders who hit big on volatile token launches often park their gains in political or sports markets.
The Decision to Hold
Gud.hl had a clear exit ramp. After Argentina beat the Netherlands in the semifinal, the trader could have sold the shares for a substantial profit. Instead, they held through the final, betting on Lionel Messi's team to finish the job.
Spain's substitute Ferran Torres scored the match-winner in extra time, and the Argentina shares went to zero. The $1.2 million loss is one of the largest single-trade wipeouts on Polymarket this year.
A Familiar Pattern
The trader's identity remains unknown. The Polymarket account name gud.hl offers no clues, and the Solana wallet that funded the bet has gone quiet since the loss. Bubblemaps said it could not link the wallet to any known individual or entity.
For now, the $1.2 million sits as a reminder that even the biggest positions can vanish in 90 minutes of extra time.
