Revolut announced it's rolling out its first euro-backed stablecoin, a move that puts the fintech firm into the business of issuing digital currency. The company says the token is part of its broader expansion in the crypto ecosystem.
First stablecoin for Revolut
Revolut has been a popular way to buy and sell crypto, but it has never issued its own token. That changes now. The stablecoin will be pegged to the euro, meaning it's designed to hold its value against the currency. Revolut said the token is backed by euro reserves.
It's a different approach than just supporting other stablecoins. By minting its own, Revolut keeps more control over its ecosystem and can offer users a native asset within the app.
Stablecoins are the workhorses of crypto, used for trading, payments, and moving value between exchanges. Adding a euro-backed version gives Revolut its own tool for those jobs. The company already offers wallets and trading to millions of customers, so the stablecoin is a natural fit for its crypto ambitions.
Revolut isn't the first to issue a euro stablecoin, but it is one of the biggest retail fintech platforms to do so. The announcement positions Revolut to take a larger role in the stablecoin market.
What's missing
Revolut has not disclosed a name for the stablecoin, a launch date, or which blockchain it will run on. The announcement only confirmed the euro backing. That leaves a lot to be filled in, but the direction is clear: Revolut wants its own digital asset.
