Ripple Invests in Flutterwave to Bring RLUSD Stablecoin to African Payments

Ripple has put money into Flutterwave, the $3.2 billion payments platform that serves Africa, to weave its dollar-backed stablecoin RLUSD into the company's payment infrastructure. The deal is designed to speed up settlement, remittances, and commercial payment flows across the continent.

Why RLUSD matters for cross-border commerce

Ripple is betting that stablecoins can take a bigger role in moving money across borders. RLUSD is pegged to the U.S. dollar, which gives it a stable value — a key feature for businesses and individuals in markets where local currencies can swing wildly. By plugging RLUSD into Flutterwave's network, Ripple gets a direct channel into one of Africa's largest payment processors.

What Flutterwave brings to the table

Flutterwave already handles billions of dollars in transactions each year. Its platform connects merchants, banks, and payment providers across more than 30 African countries. The company's valuation hit $3.2 billion after its last funding round, making it one of the continent's most valuable fintechs. For Ripple, that reach is the point: Flutterwave's existing infrastructure can put RLUSD in front of millions of users without Ripple having to build its own network from scratch.

Where RLUSD will be used

The integration targets three specific use cases. First, faster settlement — merchants and payment providers can clear transactions in RLUSD instead of waiting days for traditional bank transfers. Second, remittances: Africans living abroad send tens of billions of dollars home each year, and a stablecoin could cut both time and fees. Third, commercial payment flows — businesses that trade across borders can use RLUSD to pay suppliers or receive payments without the usual currency conversion headaches.

Ripple has not said how much it invested in Flutterwave or whether the deal includes any equity stake. The companies have not disclosed a timeline for when RLUSD will go live on Flutterwave's platform.
