S&P Dow Jones Indices and Pantera Capital have launched the S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index (SPPDA), a benchmark that picks crypto assets based on protocol revenue rather than market capitalization. The index launched with 18 constituents and uses data from Artemis Analytics for protocol revenue and Lukka for pricing. It's a sign that institutional-grade data is getting better, but it's not an ETF — not yet.
How the index works
The SPPDA doesn't just look at how big a token's market cap is. Instead, it measures network activity and economics by tracking protocol-level revenue — the fees users pay to use a blockchain or dApp. That revenue can swing wildly. Trading bursts, incentive programs, fee changes, and market cycles all affect it. The index uses Artemis to pull that revenue data and Lukka to price the assets. The result is a snapshot of which networks are actually generating economic value, not just speculative interest.
Right now the SPPDA is a benchmark index, not an exchange-traded product. No ETF or fund has been launched based on it. But the index could serve as a foundation for future investment products — if someone decides to build one. The timing isn't accidental. Institutional players have been pushing for better, more transparent crypto benchmarks. This one gives them a way to bet on network usage rather than just token price.
The data quality push
The launch reflects a broader trend: crypto data is getting good enough for serious money. Artemis and Lukka are both known for institutional-grade feeds. Pairing revenue metrics with reliable pricing is a step toward making crypto look more like a traditional asset class. Whether that's enough to get pension funds or endowments in remains an open question. But the infrastructure is slowly falling into place.
The index is live now. Whether it becomes the basis for ETFs or other products depends on regulatory appetite and whether protocol revenue proves stable enough for mainstream use. For now, it's a tool for measuring what crypto networks actually earn — not just what they're worth on paper.
