Santander Discloses $4.3M Bitcoin ETF Stake via BlackRock's IBIT

Banco Santander, Spain's biggest bank, has disclosed a $4.3 million investment in Bitcoin through BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT). The stake, revealed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, marks one of the first direct Bitcoin ETF positions taken by a major European lender.

The $4.3M IBIT stake

Santander holds 129,615 shares of IBIT, according to the filing. BlackRock's Bitcoin ETF now manages $46.9 billion in assets. The SEC approved a batch of spot Bitcoin ETFs in 2024, opening the door for traditional institutions to get Bitcoin exposure without holding the asset directly.

Openbank's crypto services

Santander's digital arm, Openbank, has already let customers buy Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies for about a year. The bank's own balance-sheet investment suggests it sees the asset class as more than just a client service — it's putting its own capital to work.

Institutional ETF inflows

U.S. Bitcoin ETFs now manage over $83 billion in assets, per CoinGlass data. Other big names — Fidelity, Morgan Stanley — have launched their own Bitcoin ETF products. Santander's disclosure adds a European heavyweight to that list. The timing isn't accidental: the SEC's 2024 approval gave banks a regulated vehicle to park institutional money in crypto.

What's less clear is whether Santander plans to grow that position or if this is a toe-in-the-water test. The filing doesn't say. But for a bank that size, $4.3 million is pocket change — the signal matters more than the sum.
