Lomond School in Helensburgh, Scotland unveiled the Satoshi Scholarship this week, covering two years of tuition and boarding for one financially struggling student. Funded entirely by Bitcoin donations from the global community, the program opens global applications until May 24, 2026. It's the latest move by the school, which became the world's first to accept Bitcoin for tuition last autumn.
How the Scholarship Works
Applicants must clear standard admissions checks and prove financial need through a means test. Winners will serve as community role models from Senior 1 through Upper Sixth grade while receiving full coverage. The deadline feels tight given it lands just three weeks from today.
Bitcoin Infrastructure on Campus
Lomond already processes Bitcoin tuition payments after launching the option in autumn 2025. Some parents pay fees this way while the school runs its own Bitcoin node and mining units. Those mining systems do double duty by heating classrooms during colder months. The institution's building a Bitcoin treasury with community donations to shore up long-term finances.
Curriculum Ties to Economics
School leaders worked with economist Saifedean Ammous to weave Bitcoin into lessons on Austrian economics. Students now grapple with sound money principles and capital formation concepts. This isn't the school's first Bitcoin move—it's been accepting payments for over nine months now.
Applications close May 24. The school expects the first scholarship recipient to start before the next academic year begins.
