SharpLink Posts $394M Q2 Loss on Ethereum Write-Downs, Staking Revenue Holds Up

SharpLink reported a $394.3 million net loss for Q2 2026, a figure that looks brutal on paper but comes mostly from accounting charges tied to its Ethereum holdings. The company said $321.0 million of the loss was unrealized ETH depreciation, with another $76.1 million in impairment charges on liquid staking tokens. Staking operations still pulled in $11.2 million of the $11.5 million in total revenue, so the underlying business hasn't collapsed.

The loss is mostly accounting, not operations

According to SharpLink's Q2 Form 10-Q, the loss is primarily an accounting effect from Ethereum-related holdings, not a sign that day-to-day operations are bleeding cash. The company's ETH holdings actually increased during the quarter despite the reported loss. That's the nature of unrealized losses — they reverse when prices move back up, but they still hit the income statement now.

This isn't a story of a company burning through money. It's a story of a balance sheet marked to market in a quarter when ETH took a hit. The impairment charges on liquid staking tokens complicate things further, but they're also non-cash items.

Liquid staking tokens carry extra risk

SharpLink flagged that its liquid staking tokens introduce risks beyond plain ETH: smart contract vulnerabilities, liquidity crunches, depeg events, custody headaches, and accounting complexity. That last one is doing the heavy lifting here. The $76.1 million impairment charge is a direct result of those tokens losing value or failing to hold their peg, and the company is required to write them down.

These tokens are a bet that staking yields justify the added complexity. In a quarter like this, the complexity shows up as a line item.

Staking revenue remains the core

Staking generated $11.2 million of the $11.5 million in total revenue — roughly 97%. So the business model is still working, but it's also a reminder that SharpLink is essentially a single-asset play on Ethereum's price and staking economics. The loss doesn't change that. It just makes the exposure more visible.

With ETH holdings up, the company is doubling down on that bet. The next 10-Q will show whether the write-downs reverse or deepen, but for now the operating side looks stable.
