Shiba Inu's layer-2 network, Shibarium, has seen its decentralized exchange volume collapse by 95% over the past seven days. The sharp drop raises questions about the network's traction just months after its much-hyped launch.
What Shibarium was supposed to do
Shibarium is a separate blockchain built on top of Ethereum, designed to process transactions faster and cheaper than the mainnet. It was rolled out in August 2023 as a way to give the Shiba Inu ecosystem — best known for its meme coin SHIB — real utility. The network hosts its own DEX, ShibaSwap, and a handful of other apps. Early on, trading volumes on Shibarium's DEX spiked, fueled by airdrop farming and speculative interest.
The 95% drop in numbers
Data from DeFiLlama shows that Shibarium's DEX volume has fallen from roughly $2.5 million per day to around $125,000. That's a 95% decline in a single week. The total value locked on the network has also slid, though not as dramatically. The drop appears to be part of a broader cooling-off period for the Shiba Inu ecosystem, which has seen its token price fall more than 20% over the same period.
Possible reasons behind the slump
No official explanation has been given by the Shibarium team. But the decline mirrors a pattern seen in many new layer-2 networks: an initial burst of activity from yield farmers and speculators, followed by a sharp retreat when incentives dry up. Shibarium's early volume was heavily driven by a liquidity mining program that has since ended. Without fresh incentives, users have little reason to stay. The broader crypto market has also been sluggish, with Bitcoin and Ethereum trading sideways.
What this means for Shiba Inu holders
For holders of SHIB, the drop in Shibarium activity is a concern. The network was supposed to give the token real-world use cases, such as cheap transfers and DeFi applications. If Shibarium fails to attract sustained usage, the narrative around Shiba Inu could shift back to being purely a meme coin. The team has hinted at future projects, including a metaverse and a card game, but no launch dates have been set.
The next few weeks will show whether Shibarium can recover or if the 95% decline becomes the new normal. No new incentive programs have been announced.
