Why Finality Matters
Finality is the point at which a transaction becomes irreversible on a blockchain. For Solana, which already processes thousands of transactions per second, shaving off even a fraction of a second matters. Faster finality means less waiting for users and dApps, and it reduces the window for potential attacks like double-spending. The 100x gain suggests Alpenglow could make Solana even more competitive among high-throughput blockchains, though the test cluster isn't the mainnet.
What's in the Alpenglow Upgrade
The Alpenglow upgrade focuses on the consensus layer, specifically how validators agree on the order and finality of transactions. The test cluster ran a modified version of Solana's proof-of-history (PoH) combined with its proof-of-stake (PoS) mechanism. Solana's mainnet has faced outages before, and scaling up any upgrade to the full validator set introduces new variables. The team hasn't announced a timeline for deploying Alpenglow on mainnet. They're likely to run more tests, possibly on a testnet with a larger validator set, before rolling it out.
