Solana's Sub-Second Finality Target Puts Blockchain Speed Gap in Focus

Blockchain finality — the point at which a transaction can't be reversed — remains a fragmented concept across networks. A new IMF working paper draws a line between probabilistic finality, as seen in proof-of-work chains like Bitcoin, and deterministic finality, common in proof-of-stake systems. The paper arrives as Solana's Alpenglow upgrade targets sub-second finality of roughly 150 milliseconds, a dramatic leap from its current ~12.8-second TowerBFT finality and 400 ms pre-confirmation latency.

Bitcoin's probabilistic guarantee

Bitcoin never reaches absolute finality. The risk of a chain reorganization decreases with each additional confirmation but never hits zero. Six confirmations has become the rough industry norm for routine transactions, though context matters: two to three confirmations might suffice for small retail purchases, while larger values demand six or more. Merchants are advised to set written policies by chain, amount, and counterparty risk — a practice that becomes more complex as multi-chain payments grow.

Ethereum's 16-minute wait

Ethereum's Gasper consensus, built on Casper-FFG, delivers deterministic finality after about 16 to 17 minutes — roughly 1,000 seconds. That's a long time for a merchant waiting for a payment to clear. Some Ethereum stakeholders argue that cutting finality to under a minute would improve bridge safety and make layer-2 payments and user experience significantly smoother. The debate is active, but no concrete timeline for such a change has emerged.

Solana's sub-second target

Solana's Alpenglow upgrade aims to slash finality to about 150 milliseconds. That's a step change from the current ~12.8-second TowerBFT finality, though the network already offers 400 ms pre-confirmation latency. Validators have begun registering BLS public keys on mainnet as part of governance and validator operations — a technical prerequisite for the upgrade. If successful, Solana would offer the fastest deterministic finality among major blockchains, but the upgrade is still rolling out.

What this means for merchants

Layer-2 solutions provide instant local receipts, but true finality still depends on the underlying L1 finalization or challenge windows. That means a merchant accepting an L2 payment can't treat it as fully settled until the L1 confirms — or until a challenge period expires. The IMF paper's distinction between probabilistic and deterministic finality gives merchants a framework, but the practical question remains: which chain's finality model do you trust for a given transaction value? The answer, for now, depends on the merchant's own risk appetite and the specific chain's guarantees.

The next concrete milestone is Solana's Alpenglow mainnet activation, which will test whether sub-second finality can hold up under real-world conditions. Ethereum's finality debate continues without a clear proposal. Bitcoin's probabilistic model isn't changing. For merchants, the finality gap between chains isn't closing — it's widening.
