Spain's World Cup Final Training Scrapped as Storms Hit New Jersey; Kraken Sponsorship Unaffected

Spain's final training session ahead of the 2026 World Cup final was called off Sunday after storms rolled through the New Jersey area, forcing the team to scrap its last on-field preparations at MetLife Stadium. The cancellation comes just a day before the championship match, but the weather-related disruption has no bearing on Kraken's historic FIFA crypto sponsorship — a deal that remains active despite the last-minute schedule change.

Storms force last-minute change

The Spanish squad was scheduled to hold a closed training session Sunday afternoon at the stadium in East Rutherford. But a line of severe thunderstorms swept across northern New Jersey, bringing heavy rain and lightning. Team officials decided to cancel rather than risk player safety or field damage. No makeup session was announced. Spain will now go into Monday's final without a full run-through on the game field.

Kraken's FIFA deal still in play

Kraken, the U.S.-based crypto exchange, signed a multi-year sponsorship with FIFA earlier this year — the first crypto brand to back the world's biggest sporting event. The deal covers branding, fan experiences, and digital asset integrations across the tournament. Sunday's training cancellation doesn't touch that agreement. The sponsorship continues as planned, with Kraken's logo still visible around the stadium and in broadcast segments.

Spain will hold a light walk-through at its team hotel instead. The final kicks off Monday evening at MetLife Stadium. Whether the missed practice affects Spain's rhythm is an open question — but the weather, at least, is forecast to clear by game time.
