Stacks Launches Bitcoin Staking Model, Lets Users Earn BTC Directly

Stacks rolled out a Bitcoin staking model this week that lets users earn yield denominated in Bitcoin — no altcoins required. The system, built on Stacks' layer-2 protocol, directly rewards stakers in BTC rather than in a separate token, a shift from the typical earn-this-to-get-that model that forces users to juggle multiple assets.

How the staking works

Instead of locking up Bitcoin and receiving a native Stacks token as a reward, users now accumulate yield in Bitcoin itself. The mechanism leverages Stacks' Proof-of-Transfer consensus, which already anchors to the Bitcoin blockchain, but this upgrade routes the payout straight to BTC. The exchange rate and reward frequency are determined by the protocol's on-chain logic, not by an external oracle or centralized pool.

The timing isn't accidental. Bitcoin's own staking narrative has gathered steam over the past year, but most solutions still require wrapping BTC into a synthetic token or trusting a third party. Stacks' approach keeps the entire yield cycle inside Bitcoin's native ecosystem — at least on paper. For users who want to put their BTC to work but don't want to touch altcoins, this removes a major psychological and operational barrier.

What users need to know

The staking model went live on May 18. Users stake their BTC via Stacks' wallet or any compatible interface that supports the new reward contract. There's no minimum lockup period, though the protocol applies a dynamic cooldown window before unstaked BTC is fully spendable — a standard safeguard against rapid mass exits. The team has published a technical walkthrough on the Stacks GitHub repo.

Stacks plans to roll out a liquid staking variant in the coming months, according to the project's roadmap. That version would allow staked BTC to remain composable across DeFi protocols while still earning yield. No firm date has been set, but the current model is live now and processing rewards.
