Starknet's STRK Tumbles 28% as 127M Token Unlock Looms

Starknet's STRK token was the worst performer among the top 300 cryptocurrencies on Monday, sliding 27.9% in 24 hours to $0.08675. The drop comes just days after a blistering rally that pushed the token to $0.1265 on October 11 — its highest price since early December — and despite the sell-off, STRK is still up 213.82% over the past month.

The immediate catalyst for the pullback isn't hard to find. On October 15, Starknet will unlock 127 million STRK, equal to 3.37% of the token's released supply, according to Tokenomist. Of that batch, 66.61 million tokens are earmarked for early contributors and 60.39 million for investors. At current prices, the unlock is worth more than $11 million.

What's behind the parabolic move

The rally kicked off after Starknet's October 8 post on X, in which the project said it is considering moving from an Ethereum Layer 2 to a standalone Layer 1. The stated goal: become the first fully quantum-resistant network, with a 2027 target. Traders latched onto the narrative fast, and the token more than doubled in the days that followed.

On-chain activity confirmed the surge in interest. Network growth hit a record 1,166 new STRK wallets in a single day, while active addresses reached 2,822 on October 11 — surpassing the 2,579 recorded on February 21, 2024.

Santiment flags a classic FOMO setup

Not everyone is reading the surge as healthy. Analytics firm Santiment described the spike in new participants as a classic FOMO setup, warning it increases the odds of a short-term retrace. The firm also noted a split in behavior: retail enthusiasm has cooled, but large wallets kept growing their positions.

Starknet's top 10 addresses now hold about 7.09 billion STRK, their highest combined balance since April, according to Santiment. That divergence — big holders accumulating while smaller traders pile in late — is the kind of pattern that often precedes a shakeout.

The unlock overhang

Wednesday's unlock is part of a monthly schedule that will send STRK tokens to early contributors and investors through March 2027. That's a long runway of supply hitting the market, and it's a structural headwind the token can't wish away. Add in a broader crypto market that fell 4% on the day, and the selling pressure on STRK was compounded.

Whether the Layer 1 pivot can sustain momentum past this unlock is the open question. The token has given back a chunk of its recent gains, but it's still far above where it traded a month ago. The next test comes October 15, when those 127 million tokens hit the market.
