Stellar is adding a new way to keep transaction details private. Private Payments, a feature developed by Nethermind, is now live on the network's testnet. It's a privacy pool designed to let two parties transact without exposing the specifics to the public ledger.
How Private Payments works
Private Payments is built around the idea of counterparty-level privacy. Instead of making a transaction fully transparent, it lets you and the person you're paying share a secret. Only the two of you can see the amount, the asset, and the details of the deal. The rest of the network just sees that a transaction occurred, not what happened inside it.
Why Stellar needs this
Stellar's blockchain is open by default, which works fine for many use cases. But not every business wants its financial moves on public display. A company paying a supplier, or an individual sending a payment for a contract, might prefer that the details stay between the two parties. Private Payments is an attempt to close that gap and make Stellar more appealing to people who need a little more discretion.
Testnet phase
Right now, Private Payments is running on the testnet, which means it's open for developers to experiment with and stress-test. The code is fresh and likely has bugs to work out. A mainnet release hasn't been scheduled yet, but the testnet is the typical first step toward a broader rollout. Developers who want to see what the feature looks like can start poking at it today.
The next milestone is a mainnet launch, though there's no date for it yet. For now, the testnet is where the action is.
