Strategy Unveils New Bitcoin Metrics to Standardize Corporate Treasury Reporting

Strategy introduced four new Bitcoin metrics this week, aiming to give corporate treasurers a standardized way to talk about their Bitcoin holdings. The firm, which holds 843,775 BTC, unveiled Net BTC, Net BPS, BTC Hurdle ARR, and BTC Floor ARR. The move is an attempt to build a financial vocabulary that works for companies sitting on large Bitcoin treasuries — something that's been missing as more firms add the asset to their balance sheets.

The new metrics

Net BTC is straightforward: total Bitcoin held minus any Bitcoin pledged as collateral. Net BPS takes that number and divides it by shares outstanding, giving a per-share figure. BTC Hurdle ARR sets a minimum annual return the treasury needs to hit before it's considered profitable, while BTC Floor ARR defines the lowest acceptable return before the board gets nervous. Together, they're meant to replace the ad-hoc reporting that corporate Bitcoin holders have been using.

Building a common language

Right now, every company that holds Bitcoin reports its treasury performance differently. Some use mark-to-market, others use cost basis, and a few just say 'we have X coins.' Strategy's metrics are an attempt to standardize that. The idea is that if a dozen firms all report Net BPS, investors can compare them directly. Whether the industry adopts them is another question — but Strategy has the balance sheet to make the push credible.

Strategy's growing treasury

The firm's own holdings are massive: 843,775 BTC. That's roughly 4% of all Bitcoin that will ever exist. The new metrics give Strategy a way to report performance that doesn't rely solely on the spot price. For a company that's essentially a Bitcoin treasury with a software business attached, that matters. The timing isn't accidental — more corporate treasurers are asking how to account for crypto holdings, and regulators are starting to pay attention.

Adoption ahead

The metrics are live now, posted on Strategy's investor relations page. No other company has publicly adopted them yet. But the framework is open — any firm can start reporting Net BTC and Net BPS tomorrow. The real test will come when a second or third company uses the same language. Until then, it's a proposal from the biggest player in the space. The market will decide if it sticks.
