Sui Network went offline for nearly six hours Thursday, the latest in a string of disruptions that have tested the blockchain's stability. The cause: a bug in the gas charging logic introduced with the recent 1.72 update, according to the network's status page. Activity resumed after a fix was deployed, but validators are still operating under degraded performance.
What went wrong
The outage lasted 5 hours and 55 minutes. Sui's team traced the problem to faulty code in the gas metering system — not a new attack or a user-driven incident, but an internal bug that slipped through testing. It's not the first time Sui has stumbled on a software patch. A similar outage in November 2024 was caused by a bug in transaction scheduling logic.
A pattern of disruption
Thursday's downtime marks the third significant Sui outage in roughly 18 months. In January, the chain was offline for more than six hours. Each time the team has patched the issue and resumed operations, but the frequency is hard to ignore. For a network that markets itself as a high-performance Layer 1, even a single six-hour blackout can dent confidence. Two in a year? That's a harder sell.
Market reaction
SUI token dropped from $0.95 to $0.89 during the disruption but quickly stabilized near $0.925. Over the past 24 hours, the token actually gained about 1.5%. The short-term bounce doesn't tell the whole story: SUI is down nearly 17% over the past week amid broader crypto weakness. That's a steep slide from mid-May, when the token rallied to nearly $1.40 — its highest since January — on news that Sui Group Holdings had staked 108.7 million SUI tokens (removing about 3% of circulating supply), plus optimism around CME Group SUI futures and a partnership with African payments firm Paga.
The network is live but running in a degraded state. Sui's team hasn't said when full performance will be restored, or whether the 1.72 update will be rolled back or further patched. For validators and users, the next few days will show if the fix holds — or if another six-hour wait is around the corner.
