How it works
The integration lets users receive Bitcoin through their existing mobile money account. Instead of a long alphanumeric wallet address, the sender needs only the recipient's phone number. Behind the scenes, Tando handles the conversion and custody, depositing the Bitcoin value into the user's mobile money balance or holding it as Bitcoin, depending on the user's preference. The process is designed to be as simple as sending a regular peer-to-peer mobile money transfer.
Why Kenya
Kenya is one of the world's most mobile-money-dependent economies. Roughly 40 million people — a majority of the adult population — use mobile money services daily for everything from paying bills to receiving wages. By plugging Bitcoin into that existing infrastructure, Tando removes one of the biggest hurdles to crypto adoption: the friction of setting up and managing a wallet. Users don't need a smartphone app or internet access beyond what they already use for mobile money.
What this means for adoption
For years, crypto advocates have argued that Bitcoin could be a powerful tool for financial inclusion in markets where traditional banking is thin. But the practical challenge has always been usability. Requiring people to download a separate app, memorize seed phrases, and navigate exchange interfaces is a non-starter for millions.
