Tassat to Launch Stablecoin Reserve Marketplace for Regional Banks

Tassat, the company that built the blockchain-based payment network Signet, plans to launch a marketplace early next year that connects stablecoin issuers with regional and community banks to manage their reserve assets. The initiative would give smaller lenders a foothold in the fast-growing stablecoin sector, which has largely been dominated by big Wall Street custodians.

What the marketplace will do

The platform will let stablecoin issuers deposit reserves at participating regional banks, which then hold those funds in segregated accounts. Tassat will provide the blockchain infrastructure to track and verify the reserves in real time. The goal is to offer issuers a way to diversify their reserve holdings beyond a handful of large institutions while giving community banks a new source of low-cost deposits.

Tassat's track record with Signet

Tassat previously developed Signet, a permissioned blockchain network used by banks to settle payments in real time. Signet is currently used by dozens of U.S. banks for instant transfers. The new marketplace builds on that technology but is designed specifically for stablecoin reserves, a market that has grown rapidly as digital dollar tokens gain traction.

Regional and community banks have struggled to compete with larger institutions in the digital asset space. By offering a compliant platform for stablecoin reserves, Tassat could help these banks attract deposits and fee income without taking on the risk of directly issuing stablecoins. The company says the marketplace will operate under existing banking regulations, with each bank maintaining custody of its own reserves.

Timeline and next steps

Tassat aims to launch the marketplace in the first quarter of next year. The company is currently in talks with several stablecoin issuers and regional banks, though it has not named any participants. Regulatory clarity will be a key factor; the platform must comply with state and federal banking rules, as well as any forthcoming stablecoin legislation. Tassat expects to announce pilot partners before the end of this year.
