Telegram CEO Pavel Durov announced the Gram Wallet on Wednesday, a fee-free self-custodial crypto wallet that will launch this summer for the messaging app's more than 1 billion users. The move brings a non-custodial option directly into the platform's existing interface, letting users hold their own keys without paying transaction fees.

What the Gram Wallet does

The wallet is designed to be a simple, built-in tool for sending and receiving crypto. Durov emphasized that it's self-custodial — meaning Telegram won't hold users' private keys. The fee-free structure is a notable departure from most exchange-hosted wallets, which typically charge for withdrawals or trades. Telegram plans to roll it out to its global user base over the coming weeks.

Telegram has long been a hub for crypto communities, with thousands of groups dedicated to trading, mining, and project discussion. But until now, the app lacked a native wallet. The Gram Wallet changes that, potentially turning Telegram into a distribution channel for crypto adoption at a scale few apps can match. Durov's announcement didn't specify which blockchains or tokens the wallet will support initially.

The self-custody angle

Self-custodial wallets have gained traction after a string of exchange collapses and hacks over the past few years. By keeping control with the user, Telegram sidesteps the liability that comes with holding customer funds. The trade-off: users are responsible for their own seed phrases and security. Durov didn't detail recovery options or whether Telegram will offer any fallback support.

The Gram Wallet is expected to begin rolling out before September. Telegram hasn't released a specific date, but the summer launch window means the first users could get access within weeks.
