Tether's USD₮ stablecoin is now live on the Celo network, giving users the ability to pay transaction fees directly in the token. The integration, announced by Tether, is issued through Anchorage Bank and marks another step in expanding stablecoin adoption on Celo.
Gas Fee Support for Celo Users
With the launch, anyone holding USD₮ on Celo can use it to cover gas fees — the costs required to process transactions on the blockchain. Previously, Celo users had to hold the network's native asset, CELO, or other supported tokens to pay those fees. The change removes that friction, making it easier for USD₮ holders to interact with decentralized applications and move funds without needing a separate fee token.
Anchorage Bank as Issuer
Anchorage Bank, a federally chartered digital asset bank in the United States, is the issuer of USD₮ on the Celo network. Anchorage provides custody and issuance services for the stablecoin, ensuring that each USD₮ is fully backed by reserves. The bank's involvement adds a layer of regulatory oversight to the token's presence on Celo.
Expanding Stablecoin Adoption on Celo
Celo is a mobile-first blockchain platform designed to make decentralized financial tools accessible via smartphones. The addition of USD₮, the largest stablecoin by market capitalization, broadens the range of stable assets available on the network. Tether's move aligns with its strategy of deploying on multiple blockchains to increase the utility of its token across different ecosystems.
The launch gives Celo users another option for transacting in a dollar-pegged asset, potentially attracting more liquidity and activity to the network. It also opens the door for developers to build applications that rely on USD₮ for payments, remittances, or savings.
