Three Bridges Exploited in One Day, Ethereum Ecosystem Loses $35M

Three separate bridge exploits drained nearly $35 million from Ethereum-adjacent projects in a single day, rattling an ecosystem already struggling to hold support. The Verus Ethereum bridge lost about $7.54 million after an attacker targeted its off-chain import mechanism — not Ethereum's base layer. Within six hours, AFX on Arbitrum bled $24.15 million and Bitcoin scaling network B² lost $3.86 million. Ethereum itself wasn't directly compromised, but the repeated hits are eroding market confidence.

How the attacks worked

The Verus exploit didn't touch Ethereum's core code. Instead, the attacker abused the bridge's import mechanism to drain ETH, tBTC, USDC, USDT, EURC, MKR, and scrvUSD from bridge reserves. AFX on Arbitrum and B² suffered similar off-chain vulnerabilities. All three incidents happened in a tight window, suggesting either coordinated action or copycat behavior. None of the affected projects have released full post-mortems yet.

Ethereum's bruised confidence

Ethereum trades at $1,935 at press time, having entered a consolidation phase after recovering from recent lows — until this week. Traders are watching whether buyers can defend support around current levels. The bullish case still holds if spot demand absorbs the fear and institutional buying returns near major moving averages. But the base case now points to sideways trading. A second major exploit could spark another round of selling and threaten nearby support.

Bullish forecasts remain — for now

Despite the bloodbath, some big names haven't budged. Standard Chartered projects ETH could reach $7,500 by year's end. Arthur Hayes has suggested a cycle peak between $10,000 and $20,000. Those calls assume the security narrative stabilizes. Right now, that's a big if.

Bitcoin Hyper raises $32.9M amid the chaos

Not every bridge story this week was bad. Bitcoin Hyper, positioning as the first Bitcoin Layer 2 with full Solana Virtual Machine integration, raised $32.9 million in a presale at $0.0136835 per token. Staking is available at high APY. The project claims its Decentralized Canonical Bridge and SVM-powered execution outperform Solana on latency benchmarks. Whether that holds up under real-world stress — and whether it avoids the same kind of off-chain bugs that felled Verus, AFX, and B² — remains an open question.
