Toncoin (TON) more than doubled in the past week, rallying over 100% after Telegram CEO Pavel Durov said the messaging giant will replace the TON Foundation as the 'driving force behind TON' and become its largest validator. The move effectively pulls the project closer to Telegram's core operations, a shift that sent the token sharply higher.
Other gainers in a mixed market
Zcash (ZEC) reached a fresh year-to-date high, erasing its early-2026 drawdown entirely. Internet Computer (ICP), Bittensor (TAO), and Ondo (ONDO) also logged notable gains. But the broader picture is less uniform: the 14-day correlation between altcoins and Bitcoin hit its lowest level since July 2025, a sign that only a handful of tokens are breaking away rather than the whole pack moving together.
Altseason signals — and the counterpoints
The TOTAL3/BTC ratio is approaching the apex of a multi-year descending triangle, a pattern that preceded major altcoin expansions in 2017 and 2020. Centralized exchange volume ratios mirror the setup seen before the 2021 altseason. Yet the Altcoin Season Index from BlockchainCenter sits at 35 — well below the 75 threshold typically required to declare altseason underway. Bitcoin dominance is trending toward 66%, and Ethereum (ETH) remains weak, suggesting rotation from BTC into altcoins hasn't started in earnest.
What traders and analysts are watching
Trader Lucky flagged a 59.6% weekly close on BTC.D as a potential trigger for rotation. Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan took a more skeptical view, arguing that broad traditional altseasons are over and that future gains will concentrate in tokens with real-world use and traction. The tension between those two outlooks — a technical pattern hinting at a breakout versus a fundamental thesis that the old playbook is dead — will shape the next move.
For now, the selective outperformance of TON, ZEC, and a few others is real, but it hasn't yet turned into the kind of synchronized rally that defines a true altseason. Whether that changes depends on whether Bitcoin dominance can break below the 59.6% level that Lucky is watching — and whether Ethereum can find its footing.
