Trader Sits on $20.5M Paper Profit From 5.76M NEAR Long While Shorting the Rest of the Market

A single Hyperliquid account is carrying roughly $20.55 million in unrealized profit on a long position of 5.76 million NEAR tokens, opened last month at an average entry price of $2.35. On-chain analysts picked up the trade first, and the size is what made it stand out: nearly six million tokens on one book, in one direction.

What makes the position unusual isn't just the profit. It's the company it keeps.

A long bet sitting inside a short book

The same trader is running short positions in seven of the largest cryptocurrencies, a list that includes XRP, Bitcoin, Ether and SOL. So the NEAR long isn't a directional bet on crypto broadly. It's a bet on NEAR specifically, stacked against shorts on most of the market's biggest names.

That's a structure traders don't take by accident. Either the account is hedging a much larger book elsewhere, or someone decided NEAR would outperform while the majors lagged. The facts don't tell us which, and the trader hasn't said.

Why NEAR, and why now

The entry averaged $2.35 in September. The token was accumulated, not bought in one clip — an average price implies multiple fills over time, which suggests the position was built with some care rather than slammed through in a single market order.

Five and a quarter million dollars of notional at entry, give or take, is big enough to move a mid-cap order book if handled badly. The fact that it was accumulated at an average suggests it wasn't.

The short side carries its own risk

Shorting seven majors simultaneously is not a quiet trade. XRP, Bitcoin, Ether and SOL are among the most liquid and most heavily traded assets in the market, and short positions on that scale can be squeezed hard if sentiment turns. The NEAR long could be printing profit while the short book bleeds, or the two could be offsetting. We don't have the full position data, only what on-chain analysts surfaced.

That's the thing about reading a wallet from the outside. You can see the positions. You can't see the intent.

What on-chain watchers are tracking

The trade first surfaced through on-chain analysis, which means it's already on the radar of anyone who watches large Hyperliquid accounts. The open question is whether the NEAR long gets scaled down, added to, or held. A position of that size doesn't exit quietly, and if the trader starts unwinding, the fills will show up on-chain long before any headline does.

For now, the paper profit stands at roughly $20.55 million. Paper being the operative word.
