Western Union and stablecoin card issuer Rain have launched Stablecard, a digital wallet and Visa card that lets users receive money transfers as USDP and spend the balance anywhere Visa is accepted. The product went live on August 4.
How Stablecard works
Stablecard combines a digital wallet with a physical or virtual Visa card. When someone sends a money transfer through Western Union, the recipient gets the funds in USDP, a stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar. The money sits in the wallet as a stablecoin, but the card lets users swipe or tap at any Visa merchant or withdraw cash at ATMs. Rain, the card issuer, handles the conversion from USDP to fiat at the point of sale.
The setup removes the need for a traditional bank account to receive and spend cross-border payments. Users can hold the stablecoin in the wallet and spend it directly, or they can convert it to local currency through the card. Western Union said the card is available now to customers in eligible markets.
Western Union’s onchain push
The launch extends Western Union’s move into blockchain-based settlement. The company had previously built infrastructure to settle payments onchain, but Stablecard marks its first consumer-facing product using stablecoins. By partnering with Rain, Western Union is betting that stablecoins can make money transfers faster and cheaper for end users.
Rain is a licensed card issuer that specializes in stablecoin-linked payment cards. The company already offers similar products for other stablecoins, but the Western Union tie-up gives it access to a global remittance network.
What the card means for users
For people who receive money from abroad, Stablecard offers a way to avoid conversion fees and bank delays. The stablecoin holds its value in dollars, so the recipient doesn’t lose money to volatility. And because Visa is accepted almost everywhere, the card works for everyday purchases.
Western Union did not disclose the number of users or transaction volumes for the first days of the launch. The company said it will expand availability to more countries over time.
