Whale Sends $180M in ETH to Binance, Raising Sell-Off Fears

A crypto whale labeled Hyperunit transferred $180 million worth of Ether to Binance this week, triggering chatter across trading desks that a major sell-off could be brewing. The move, detected on-chain Thursday, pushed the price of ETH down about 3% in the hours that followed. For a market already skittish after weeks of sideways action, a nine-figure deposit on an exchange usually signals one thing: someone is getting ready to dump.

Who is Hyperunit?

The on-chain sleuths at Whale Alert flagged the transaction early Thursday morning. Hyperunit isn't a new name — the wallet has been active for months, mostly accumulating ETH from decentralized finance protocols. But a transfer of this size to Binance is the first major withdrawal Hyperunit has made to a centralized exchange since February. That timing isn't great: Ethereum open interest has been sliding, and volume across spot markets has thinned out. A sudden $180 million wall of supply could push ETH toward $2,800 or lower, depending on how fast Binance processes the deposit.

Why it rattles the market

Whales aren't shy about moving coins, but Binance is the world's largest exchange by volume — a deposit there means the holder can sell into deep liquidity almost instantly. The concern isn't just the dollar amount; it's the message. When a big accumulator sends coins to a hot wallet, traders assume they're about to take profits or cut losses. In a low-volatility environment, that psychology can snowball. Other holders start checking their own positions, and the fear of a cascade can become self-fulfilling.

What happens next

The ETH is still sitting in Binance's deposit wallet as of Friday morning, according to Arkham Intelligence. That means the whale hasn't sold yet — but the loaded gun is on the table. Traders will be watching for any further transfers out of that Binance wallet to hot wallets or over-the-counter desks. If the ETH stays parked for a few days, the panic could fade. If it moves again quickly, expect a sharper drop. Either way, Hyperunit's next click could decide the direction of Ether for the rest of May.
