White House Video Touting Physical Trump Coin Sends TRUMP Memecoin Dipping

The White House on Wednesday shared a nine-second video promoting a new physical Trump Coin, a $1 gold-finish piece unveiled by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The coin, minted in Philadelphia and slated for release this fall, honors President Trump for the nation's 250th anniversary. But its name — identical to the TRUMP memecoin — sparked brief confusion online, and the crypto token dipped to around $1.56 from $1.59 shortly after the video circulated.

A coin for the anniversary, not a crypto

The US Mint's new coin has a gold-like finish but is made of non-precious metals. Federal law generally bars living presidents from appearing on currency, but a 2020 law permitted anniversary-themed designs for this release. The Commission of Fine Arts, whose members were appointed by Trump, approved the design in March 2026. This follows other Trump-branded currency efforts, including a proposed $250 bill and passports bearing his likeness.

Memecoin traders caught off guard

The TRUMP memecoin remains more than 97% below its January 2025 all-time high near $73. Blockchain analytics firm Nansen reported that $TRUMP has struggled due to scheduled token unlocks and retail losses. It's unclear whether the physical coin announcement rattled crypto traders or the dip is part of the token's broader decline. Some social media replies questioned whether the physical coin carries the same scam concerns as the crypto token.

The physical coin is planned for release in fall 2026. The White House video is part of a broader promotional push. Whether the memecoin's price recovers or continues its slide remains an open question — one that depends more on tokenomics than on Treasury press releases.
