Xandeum has launched Oxorro, a storage platform designed to keep data accessible even if a cloud provider shuts down. The release follows Google Cloud's May 2024 deletion of UniSuper's private cloud subscription, which locked out 620,000 pension fund members for hours. Most companies lack backup systems like UniSuper's, making resilient storage no longer optional.
Google Cloud's Costly Mistake
A routine maintenance operation accidentally erased UniSuper's entire cloud environment last May. The pension fund scrambled to restore access using external backups while members couldn't check balances or process withdrawals. Google Cloud confirmed the error but wouldn't detail how it happened. This incident exposed how fragile data access becomes when companies rely on single providers.
Oxorro's Failure-Proof Design
Oxorro doesn't assume storage providers will stay operational. It works alongside existing infrastructure, giving users real-time access through a familiar file system interface. The platform automatically shifts data between providers if one disappears rather than building new systems from scratch. Unlike traditional solutions that collapse when the provider fails, Oxorro treats disappearances as expected events.
The Backup Gap Most Companies Face
UniSuper recovered because it had redundant backups. Most organizations don't. They've cut costs by removing secondary storage layers, leaving them vulnerable to complete data blackouts during provider outages. Oxorro's approach fills this gap by making redundancy seamless. Xandeum says the platform addresses the reality that cloud providers won't always be there when you need them.
Decentralized Applications on the Horizon
Xandeum is now building smart contract-native storage specifically for decentralized applications. This new infrastructure must handle operational data management without relying on any single entity. It's a critical piece for blockchain projects where data loss could break entire networks. The work extends Oxorro's failure-resistant model beyond traditional corporate storage.
Xandeum has opened Oxorro to enterprise clients this month while finalizing the decentralized storage version for development teams.
