XRP Ledger Foundation Warns of Phishing Scam Posing as RLUSD Airdrop

The XRP Ledger Foundation has confirmed that it is not conducting an airdrop of Ripple USD (RLUSD). Social media offers claiming otherwise are part of a coordinated phishing campaign, according to XRPL developers.

What the scam looks like

Posts circulating on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Telegram promise free RLUSD tokens to anyone who connects a wallet or clicks a link. The offers often mimic official announcements, using the Foundation's name and logo. XRPL developers say the attackers are trying to trick users into handing over private keys or seed phrases.

The Foundation doesn't do airdrops. RLUSD is a stablecoin issued by Ripple, not a token the Foundation distributes. Anyone who sees such an offer should treat it as a phishing attempt.

Why it's dangerous

Phishing scams like this one can drain wallets instantly. Once an attacker gets a seed phrase, they control the wallet and all its funds. XRPL developers note that the scam is “coordinated,” meaning it's likely run by a group that's actively targeting XRP users across multiple channels.

There's no legitimate way to get free RLUSD. The coin is available only through exchanges or direct issuance. Offers promising free tokens are almost always a trap. The Foundation has issued no statements supporting any giveaway.

What users should do

Ignore any unsolicited airdrop offers. Don't click links from unknown sources. Never share your private keys or seed phrases — the Foundation will never ask for them.

If you've already interacted with the scam, move your funds to a new wallet immediately. Report the fraudulent posts to the platform where you saw them. XRPL developers are urging users to stay vigilant and to verify any official communications through the Foundation's website.

The XRP Ledger Foundation hasn't announced a timeline for a follow-up statement, but developers say they'll continue monitoring the scam networks.
