Zcash shot up nearly 5% Monday afternoon, hitting a session high near $494 and pushing its market cap back above $8 billion. The privacy-focused cryptocurrency added more than $20 in just six hours.
Privacy coin leads the pack
Zcash is the top privacy coin by market value, and Monday's rally put it firmly in the spotlight. The token climbed from around $474 to a peak of $494, a gain of roughly 4.8%. At that level, Zcash's fully diluted market capitalization crossed the $8 billion threshold for the first time in weeks.
The move came without any obvious catalyst. No major exchange listing, no protocol upgrade, no regulatory news. Just a steady grind higher through the afternoon session.
Six-hour surge adds $20
Between roughly 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Eastern time, Zcash rose more than $20. That's a sharp move for a coin that had been trading in a relatively tight range. The session high of $494 was the best level Zcash has seen since late July.
Trading volume picked up alongside the price. Data from CoinMarketCap showed ZEC volume spiking to several hundred million dollars during the rally, though it remained below the peaks seen earlier in the summer.
Market cap reclaims a key level
An $8 billion market cap is a psychological milestone for Zcash. The coin first crossed that mark in mid-July but slipped back below it last week. Monday's rally pushed it back above, and it held there into the evening.
Zcash's market cap now sits at roughly $8.1 billion, according to CoinGecko. That puts it among the top 30 cryptocurrencies by that metric.
The broader crypto market was mixed Monday. Bitcoin hovered around $11,300, while Ethereum edged higher. Privacy coins as a group saw modest gains, but Zcash was the clear outperformer.
What drove the move? No one's saying. The rally could be a short squeeze, accumulation by large holders, or just a normal swing in a volatile asset. Without a statement from the Zcash Foundation or any exchange, traders are left to guess.
Zcash closed the session near $490, still up more than 4% on the day.
