Capcom is bringing advanced path tracing to its RE ENGINE, with the technique set to appear in the upcoming titles PRAGMATA and Resident Evil Requiem. The move marks a significant push for real-time graphics in the company's internal engine.

What path tracing brings

Path tracing simulates how light bounces off surfaces in a scene, generating more realistic reflections, shadows, and global illumination than traditional rasterization or even older ray-tracing methods. By integrating it directly into RE ENGINE, Capcom can offer the effect without relying on third-party middleware or external hardware features.

The company hasn't detailed what hardware the feature will require, nor whether it will be available on all platforms. But the inclusion suggests that both PRAGMATA and Resident Evil Requiem are being built with the technology as a core component, rather than as a post-launch add-on.

Two games, one engine

PRAGMATA, a sci-fi title first announced in 2020, has been in development for several years. Details on its story and gameplay remain scarce. Resident Evil Requiem, meanwhile, is the next mainline entry in the survival horror series. Both games are being developed using RE ENGINE, which Capcom has refined since its debut with Resident Evil 7 in 2017.

The engine has already shown flexibility across genres—powering everything from the action-heavy Devil May Cry 5 to the open-world Monster Hunter Rise. Adding path tracing extends that capability further, though it may also raise the minimum hardware requirements for PC versions.

Capcom has not announced launch windows for either PRAGMATA or Resident Evil Requiem. The company is expected to share more details during its next major showcase.
