Aston Villa has completed the signing of Brazilian midfielder João Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a fee of €40 million. The move marks the centerpiece of a midfield rebuild at Villa Park following the departures of Youri Tielemans and Amadou Onana.
Why the deal happened
Villa needed to replace two key midfielders who left the club this window. Tielemans and Onana both moved on, leaving a gap in the center of the park. Gomes, 23, arrives from Wolves after three seasons in the Premier League. He made 87 appearances for the Molineux side, establishing himself as a combative ball-winner with an eye for a forward pass.
What the fee means
The €40 million outlay is a significant investment for Villa, but it reflects the club's ambition under Unai Emery. Gomes is still young and has room to develop. The fee also represents a profit for Wolves, who signed him from Flamengo for around €18 million in 2023.
Villa will integrate Gomes into a squad that finished fourth in the Premier League last season and qualified for the Champions League. Wolves, meanwhile, will look to reinvest the money as they reshape their own midfield. The transfer window remains open until the end of August.
