Aston Villa have completed the signing of Swiss international Johan Manzambi from SC Freiburg for a club-record fee that could reach €70 million. The deal, which beat Newcastle United to the striker's signature, was finalized late Tuesday.
Why Villa moved for Manzambi
Manzambi, 26, emerged as one of the standout performers at the World Cup, scoring three goals for Switzerland. His pace, strength, and finishing ability made him a priority target for Villa manager Unai Emery. The club moved quickly after the tournament, offering a package that includes performance-related add-ons to reach the €70 million figure. That sum eclipses Villa's previous transfer record, set when they signed Emiliano Buendía in 2021.
Beating Newcastle to the signing
Newcastle had been in talks with Freiburg for weeks, but Villa's willingness to meet the full asking price and offer a longer contract swayed the player. The Magpies were unwilling to go beyond €60 million, leaving the door open for Villa to swoop in. Manzambi's preference for a move to the Midlands also played a role, according to sources close to the negotiations.
What the record fee means for Villa
The €70 million investment is a clear signal of Villa's ambitions. After finishing seventh last season, the club is aiming for European qualification. Manzambi is expected to lead the line alongside Ollie Watkins, giving Emery a potent attacking duo. The fee also puts pressure on the Swiss to deliver goals immediately, but his World Cup form suggests he can handle the expectation.
Manzambi's World Cup pedigree
At the World Cup, Manzambi scored a stunning strike against Brazil and netted twice in the group stage. His performances attracted attention from across Europe, with several top clubs monitoring his situation. Freiburg had hoped to keep him, but the offer was too good to refuse. The German club will receive an initial €55 million, with the rest in bonuses.
The deal is now complete, with Manzambi set to join his new teammates for pre-season training. Villa fans will be eager to see their record signing in action when the Premier League season begins in August.
