Burnley in Talks with Wales Over Craig Bellamy Manager Appointment

Burnley has opened negotiations with the Welsh national team to appoint Craig Bellamy as its new manager, according to people familiar with the discussions. The move signals an ambitious bet on a former Premier League player whose club management experience remains thin.

Why Bellamy?

Bellamy, 45, is best known for his playing career at Liverpool, Manchester City and Celtic, among others. His coaching resume is short: he served as a player-coach for Cardiff City, then as assistant to Vincent Kompany at Anderlecht and Burnley before taking over the Wales under-21 side in 2023. He stepped up to interim head coach of the senior Wales team in 2024 after Rob Page was sacked, leading the side through a Nations League campaign. That stint impressed Burnley's hierarchy, sources said, but it represents his only senior management role — and at international level, not club level.

The Risk Factor

Hiring a manager with so little club experience is unusual for a Championship club aiming for promotion back to the Premier League. Burnley finished fifth last season under Scott Parker, who left in June after a single year in charge. The club is now without a permanent boss a month before the new season kicks off. Bellamy's lack of a track record running a league side week in, week out raises questions about how he'd handle transfers, squad rotation and the grind of a 46-game season. Club insiders acknowledge the gamble, but argue Bellamy's deep knowledge of the squad — he was part of Kompany's staff during the 2022-23 title-winning campaign — offsets some of the inexperience.

What's at Stake

Burnley's owners, ALK Capital, have shown a willingness to take chances on managers. They hired Kompany with only one season of Anderlecht experience, a bet that paid off with instant promotion. That precedent gives them cover, but it also raises expectations. The squad still contains several players on Premier League-level wages, and the financial pressure to go up is intense. A poor start could leave the club scrambling for a replacement mid-season, repeating the instability that followed Sean Dyche's departure in 2022.

Negotiations with the Football Association of Wales are ongoing. Bellamy is under contract through the 2026 World Cup cycle, so a compensation fee would be required. The Welsh FA has not publicly commented, and Burnley has declined to confirm talks. If a deal is reached, Bellamy would likely be introduced before Burnley's pre-season friendlies begin next week.
