Katie Porter Drops Out of California Governor's Race; Xavier Becerra Moves to General Election

California's gubernatorial race narrowed Tuesday as Representative Katie Porter withdrew her candidacy, while former Attorney General Xavier Becerra secured enough votes to advance to the general election. Porter's exit leaves Becerra as the leading Democratic contender in a field that now heads toward a November showdown.

The decision to bow out

Porter, who had been running since early 2023, announced she would suspend her campaign. She offered no detailed explanation in her statement, though political observers noted her struggle to gain traction against better-funded rivals. The Orange County congresswoman had focused on consumer protection and economic populism, but polls showed her trailing Becerra by double digits in the primary.

Becerra consolidates support

Becerra, who served as California attorney general and later as U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, now faces only minor opposition from independents and third-party candidates. His campaign emphasized his experience in state and federal government. With Porter out, Democratic donors and party machinery are expected to rally behind him.

Becerra's general-election opponent will be determined from a list of Republicans, including businessman John Cox and Assemblyman Kevin Kiley. The general election is set for November 5.

What Porter's withdrawal means for the race

Porter's exit clears a path for Becerra to avoid a costly intraparty fight. It also removes a progressive voice from a debate stage that now tilts toward the center. Some Porter supporters expressed frustration on social media, questioning whether the race was ever truly competitive for her.

Becerra must now unify the Democratic base before the general election. His campaign has not yet indicated whom he will select as a running mate for lieutenant governor.
