Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has dismissed a proposal from Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to freeze the fighting along the current front line. The rejection, delivered in a statement on Tuesday, underscores a rare public rift between Moscow and one of its closest Central Asian allies.
Tokayev's Proposal
Tokayev had called for an immediate halt to hostilities along the existing line of contact, urging both sides to accept the current territorial reality as a basis for negotiations. The Kazakh leader framed the freeze as a necessary step to prevent further loss of life and to create conditions for a diplomatic resolution. His appeal came amid growing international pressure to de-escalate the conflict, which has now entered its third year.
Moscow's Stance
Lavrov, however, made clear that Russia sees no merit in the proposal. In his remarks, he argued that freezing the front line would only reward what he described as aggression and would not address the root causes of the war. The foreign minister did not offer any alternative plan, instead reiterating Moscow's position that the conflict can only end when its stated military objectives are fully achieved.
