Mateus Fernandes has told people close to him that he wants to join Manchester United, even as two of Europe’s biggest clubs — Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain — chase the same signing. The midfielder’s decision to pick Old Trafford over those elite rivals signals a shift in United’s ability to attract top young talent, and it gives the club a clear target for its summer rebuild.
Why Fernandes wants United
Sources briefed on Fernandes’ thinking say the 20-year-old believes United offers the best path to regular first-team football in a competitive league. He also views the club’s project under the current management as a serious one, with room for a creative midfielder to become a central figure. That conviction has held firm despite formal approaches from Real Madrid, who can offer Champions League football next season, and PSG, who can match any wage United might put on the table.
Fernandes’ preference is not just personal — it reflects a broader shift. United have spent the past two transfer windows reshaping their scouting and recruitment to target younger, high-potential players rather than established stars on huge wages. The Fernandes pursuit fits that model exactly.
The competition for his signature
Real Madrid have tracked Fernandes since his breakout season in Portugal’s Primeira Liga. They see him as a long-term replacement for Luka Modrić, but they cannot guarantee him immediate minutes in a midfield that already includes Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga, and Federico Valverde. PSG, meanwhile, offered a lucrative package and the chance to play alongside Kylian Mbappé — at least until Mbappé’s expected summer exit. Neither club has received a commitment from Fernandes.
United’s negotiating position is complicated by the fact that Fernandes’ current club, Sporting CP, have set a release clause north of €80 million. The Red Devils have not yet triggered it, but they are preparing a formal bid that would structure payments over several installments. Sporting are aware of the player’s preference and are expected to accept a deal that meets their valuation, though they may push for a higher upfront fee.
What this means for United’s rebuild
If United complete the signing, Fernandes would become the third player under the age of 22 brought in during the past 12 months, following Rasmus Højlund and Kobbie Mainoo’s promotion to the first team. Manager Erik ten Hag has made it clear he wants a midfielder who can carry the ball through pressure and link play between the lines — traits Fernandes showed during his loan spell at Famalicão and in his first full season back at Sporting.
The club’s recruitment team have also identified a left-back and a center-forward as priorities, but the Fernandes deal is viewed internally as the one that could unlock the rest of the window. If he arrives early, it would allow United to focus their remaining budget on those other positions.
Fernandes is expected to make a final decision within the next two weeks, with United hoping to announce the signing before their pre-season tour of the United States. Real Madrid and PSG have not withdrawn, but they now know they are chasing a player whose mind is already made up.
