Napoli Reaches Personal Terms with Mario Gila, Intensifies Lazio Talks

Napoli has reached a personal agreement with Lazio defender Mario Gila and is now pushing to finalize a transfer deal with the Rome club, sources close to the negotiations confirmed.

Personal terms locked in

The Serie A side and the 23-year-old center-back have agreed on contract conditions, removing a key hurdle in the potential move. Gila, who came through Lazio's youth system and has made 42 first-team appearances, is understood to be keen on the switch to Naples.

Securing a player's personal terms is often the first concrete step in high-level negotiations, but it does not guarantee a transfer. The next, more complex stage involves agreeing a fee with the selling club.

What Lazio wants

Napoli and Lazio are now in what club insiders describe as “advanced talks” over a transfer fee. Lazio has not publicly set a price tag, but the defender is under contract until 2027, giving the Roman club significant leverage. Napoli will need to meet Lazio's valuation or offer a package — including potential add-ons or a player swap — that persuades president Claudio Lotito to sell.

Napoli's sporting director Giovanni Manna is leading the negotiations. The club is looking to strengthen its defensive options after a season of inconsistent results at the back.

Gila, a Spain under-21 international, has started 14 Serie A matches this term and has drawn praise for his composure on the ball and reading of the game. His arrival would give Napoli manager Antonio Conte another young option alongside veteran defenders.

Timing and competition

The January transfer window closes on February 3, giving both sides roughly three weeks to reach an agreement. Napoli is also monitoring other defensive targets, but Gila remains the top priority.

No other clubs have publicly entered the race, though interest from abroad cannot be ruled out if Lazio drags its feet or demands a premium fee. For now, the focus remains on direct talks between the two Italian sides.

The next milestone will be whether Napoli can submit a formal bid that Lazio considers acceptable. If not, the deal could stall — or collapse — before the window shuts.
