Qantas intends to fly passengers non-stop from Sydney to London by 2027, a route that would become the world's longest commercial flight. The airline confirmed the plan this week, though it has not yet said which aircraft it will use or the exact flight time.
Why the direct route matters
A non-stop Sydney-London service would cut travel time for passengers who currently have to change planes in hubs like Singapore or Dubai. The flight would cover a distance of roughly 17,000 kilometers, making it the longest regularly scheduled flight in the world. For Qantas, the route is a chance to expand its long-haul network and offer a product no other carrier currently provides.
Preparations for 2027
The 2027 target gives the airline several years to finalize aircraft choices and operational plans. Qantas has been studying ultra-long-haul flights for some time, but this is the first concrete timeline it has shared for the Sydney-London direct. The airline said it will provide more details on aircraft and cabin configuration closer to launch. For now, travelers eager to skip the layover will have to wait until the end of the decade for the non-stop option.
