Real Madrid in Contract Termination Talks with Dani Ceballos

Real Madrid have entered negotiations to terminate the contract of midfielder Dani Ceballos, sources at the club confirmed. The talks signal a clear end to the 27-year-old's second stint at the Santiago Bernabéu, where he has struggled to secure regular playing time under head coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Why the talks are happening

Ceballos returned to Madrid in 2019 after a two-year loan at Arsenal, but he never locked down a starting role. This season he's appeared in just 12 La Liga matches, most of them from the bench. With his contract running through June 2027, the club is looking to free up wages and a squad spot rather than wait for a transfer window buyer.

The negotiation is straightforward: both sides want an exit, but they have to agree on financial terms. Ceballos is owed the remainder of his salary, and Madrid would prefer a settlement that lets them part ways without a lump-sum payout. The talks are ongoing, and no deadline has been set.

What a termination could mean for the squad

If the termination goes through, Madrid will have one less midfielder in a crowded room. The club already has Eduardo Camavinga, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Fede Valverde, Jude Bellingham, and Luka Modrić competing for minutes. Moving Ceballos clears a spot for younger players like Nico Paz or for a potential summer signing.

Ceballos, for his part, would become a free agent immediately, able to join any club outside the transfer window. That could appeal to teams in Spain, Italy, or a return to England—where he had his best professional stretch at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta.

Ceballos's road to the exit

Signed from Real Betis in 2017 as one of Spain's brightest young midfielders, Ceballos never quite fit the Madrid mold. He won the European Under-21 Championship in 2019 and played for Spain at the Tokyo Olympics, but club minutes were scarce. His loan at Arsenal in 2018-19 and again in 2019-20 showed flashes—he started in the 2020 FA Cup final win over Chelsea—but Madrid recalled him and he returned to the bench.

Injuries haven't helped. A serious ankle problem cost him most of the 2021-22 season, and he's dealt with minor muscle issues since. Now, with no path to regular football at the Bernabéu, a clean break makes sense for everyone.

What comes next

The two sides are expected to meet again in the coming days to finalize the severance package. If an agreement is reached, Ceballos will be free to negotiate with new clubs immediately. For Madrid, the focus remains on the Champions League and La Liga title race—but off the pitch, the roster reshuffling has already begun.
