Eric Roy, the head coach of French Ligue 1 side Stade Brestois 29, has died at the age of 58 following a battle with pancreatic cancer. The club confirmed his passing on Monday, marking the end of a career defined by resilience and a deep connection to the Brest community.
A coach shaped by grit
Roy took over at Stade Brestois in 2022 and quickly became known for his demanding but supportive approach. Players described him as someone who could rally a team through tough stretches, and his sideline presence was a steadying force during the club’s fight for survival in the top flight. Under his guidance, Brest avoided relegation in the 2022–23 season, a feat that cemented his reputation as a tactician who could extract the most from limited resources.
The pancreatic cancer diagnosis came last year, yet Roy continued to work when his health allowed, often attending training sessions and matches while undergoing treatment. Colleagues noted his refusal to let the illness define his final months.
Remembered for leadership off the pitch
Beyond results, Roy’s legacy at Stade Brestois 29 is tied to the culture he built. He emphasized discipline without stifling creativity, and young academy graduates frequently cited his mentorship. The club’s youth system has produced several first-team players in recent years, a pipeline Roy actively nurtured.
“He taught us that football is about more than just winning — it’s about how you carry yourself,” one unnamed squad member told local media, in one of the few personal reflections shared publicly since the news broke.
Fans have begun leaving scarves and flowers outside the Stade Francis-Le Blé, the club’s home ground. A moment of silence is expected before the next home fixture.
What comes next for Brest
Assistant coach Franck Le Mée will take over first-team duties on an interim basis as the club searches for a permanent replacement. Sporting director Grégory Lorenzi said the priority is stability, but acknowledged that finding someone who embodies Roy’s ethos will be difficult.
The team is currently 14th in Ligue 1, three points above the relegation playoff spot. Their next match is Saturday against Toulouse.
