The widening net
The sanctions will now cover a broader set of Iranian sectors, though exactly which ones is still unclear. The existing measures already hit oil, banking, and shipping. The expansion is expected to close the gaps that businesses have used to work around those restrictions. That vagueness is itself a tool, leaving companies guessing about what's legal and what's not. That uncertainty can make trade more cautious, and that's exactly the point.
Diplomacy on thin ice
This move is likely to put a heavy strain on U.S.-Iran relations. Diplomatic channels were already fragile, and the added pressure makes it harder for either side to step back. Other countries with commercial ties to Iran will have to decide where they stand. The pressure could push Iran into a corner, making compromise on issues like nuclear talks or regional security even less
