Why the difference
The core finding boils down to social context. Humans feel less judged, embarrassed, or accountable when interacting with a machine. That absence of perceived social risk makes lying easier. But the moment a chatbot starts sounding more human—using friendly greetings, showing concern, or mimicking conversational rhythms—users start treating it more like a person. The social pressure returns, and dishonesty recedes.
What this means for chatbot design
Developers now face a trade-off. Adding human-like cues can increase trust and reduce lying, which is useful for applications like mental health support or customer service where honesty matters. But the same cues might also trigger discomfort in users who prefer a purely transactional interaction. The research suggests that the level of anthropomorphism needs to be calibrated to the task at hand.
Unanswered questions
The findings raise a deeper question: Exactly how much social mimicry is enough to discourage lying without crossing into deception?
