New Anti-Aging Studies from Seoul and Osaka Show Promise as Longevity Funding Surges

Two new studies from South Korea and Japan have given the anti-aging movement fresh scientific backing, showing that compounds can reverse cellular aging in lab tests. The research comes as venture funding for longevity startups tops $13 billion, with Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin among the high-profile donors.

The Korean study: IU1 and cellular cleanup

Researchers at Chung-Ang University in Seoul tested a compound called IU1 on fruit flies. It boosted two cellular cleanup systems, improved age-related muscle weakness, and extended the flies' lifespan. The same effects were observed in human cells in the lab. Lead researcher Seogang Hyun stated: 'We demonstrated that this synergistic mechanism could improve age-related muscle weakness in fruit flies and extend their lifespan.' The study was published in the journal Autophagy in 2024.

The Osaka study: Reversing senescence with AP2A1

At the University of Osaka, scientists found that lowering levels of a protein called AP2A1 reversed senescence in human skin and breast cells. Old cells started behaving like young ones again. The work, published in Cellular Signalling in January 2025, points to a different pathway for rejuvenation — one that directly targets the structural proteins that change as cells age.

The money behind the movement

Longevity biotech startups raised about $3.7 billion in early 2026 alone, up more than 50% from the previous year. The global anti-aging market hit roughly $85 billion in 2025. Buterin donated $2.4 million to SENS in 2018 and over $13 million to the Methuselah Foundation. Altos Labs, backed by Jeff Bezos, raised $3 billion and is working on reprogramming organs outside the body — removing an organ, keeping it alive on a machine, and running rejuvenation therapy directly. Retro Biosciences and NewLimit each raised nine-figure rounds through 2025.

A note on the viral claim

A recent online claim that humans could live to 250 years went viral. It originated from an Instagram account called elixirofscience, not from the researchers themselves. Neither study makes that claim. The real science is more incremental — but the funding and attention are real.

Both studies are now published in peer-reviewed journals. The next challenge is translating these lab results into therapies that work in humans — a step that will require even more funding and years of clinical trials.
