SpaceX has resolved a major problem with its Starship heat shield, clearing a critical hurdle that had delayed the program. The company now plans to conduct daily launches of Starship starting next year, a cadence that would dramatically lower the cost of putting payloads into orbit.
The heat shield fix
The heat shield had been a persistent headache during Starship's development. Earlier test flights showed tiles cracking or falling off during reentry. Engineers redesigned the attachment system and switched to a new ceramic composite material. The fix held up during the most recent high-altitude test, and SpaceX confirmed the issue is now behind them.
Daily launch plans
SpaceX intends to launch Starship once per day from its Texas facility by mid-2027. That's a huge jump from the current pace of about one test flight every few months. The company says the rapid turnaround is possible because the new heat shield requires minimal inspection between flights. Each launch could carry up to 100 tons of cargo, making regular resupply of orbital platforms feasible.
The breakthrough doesn't just change space travel. It also challenges the assumptions behind decentralized networks. Many blockchain projects rely on satellite constellations for connectivity or data relay. With Starship able to deploy hundreds of satellites in a single launch, the cost of building and maintaining those networks drops sharply. That could upend the economics for projects that bet on slower, more expensive launch options.
Decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePIN) that use satellite links might find themselves competing with a much cheaper alternative. At the same time, the increased launch capacity could enable new kinds of decentralized applications that require global, low-latency communication. The timing isn't great for incumbents who have been slow to adapt.
SpaceX hasn't said which customers will get first access to the daily launch slots. But the company's Starlink division is likely to be a major user, further tightening its grip on the satellite internet market. For decentralized networks, the message is clear: the cost of space access is about to fall, and the landscape will look different a year from now.
